The design of the single-end luminaires is such that the non-spring tombstone (where the pin inserts into the lamp holder) has two contacts; one is the line voltage and the other is connected to the ballast. Lampholders installed over highly combustible material shall be of the unswitched type. The insulation used on conductors must be suitable for the temperatures that they will be subjected to. Article 110 of the National Electrical Code (NEC) covers the general requirements for the examination and approval, installation and use, access to, and spaces about electrical equipment. There are issues related to combustibles due to the heat that is generated by traditional lighting methods. The two that stand out are where subject to physical damage, which to date the NEC cant or wont define, and wet or damp locations. When inspecting the supports, please remember 410.154 Fastening, which states that it shall be securely mounted so that each support is suitable for the weight of the luminaires that can be installed. Handlamps shall be equipped with a substantial guard attached to the lampholder or handle. Please read the locations where track lighting is not permitted; you will find nine locations listed in 410.151(C). Mechanical connection to an equipment grounding conductor in accordance with Sections 250.118 and 250.122. Lampholders installed in wet locations shall be listed for use in wet locations. Insulating joints that are not designed to be mounted with screws or bolts shall have an exterior metal casing, insulated from both screw connections. Connection of portable luminaires, portable and mobile signs, or appliances. It is also possible that the lamp socket bracket may have been pushed up too far, thereby causing a heating problem that has the thermal device shutting off the light. Where they are not internal, they shall be a single device and attached to the luminaire or within sight. All wiring must be in rigid conduit or threaded steel intermediate metal conduit and will need to have seal fittings installed per 501.15 (A). Lampholders of the screw shell type shall be installed for use as lampholders only. 410.48 Luminaire Wiring General. Lampholders.
